The SPC Lab · rigid-core floors, explained

What's inside an SPC vinyl plank?

Five layers, one rigid stone-plastic core. Pull a plank apart, sink it in water, heat it up and click it together, then decide if it belongs in your home.

The 60-second answer

What SPC means
Stone-plastic composite (some brands say stone-polymer composite). It is a rigid-core vinyl plank.
What the core is
Limestone (calcium carbonate) powder, PVC resin and stabilizers, pressed into a dense board. No wood fiber.
Why people pick it
The plank is waterproof, the rigid core resists dents and bridges small subfloor dips better than flexible vinyl, and it clicks together as a floating floor.
The trade-offs
It feels firmer and can sound harder than wood or carpet, the slab underneath still has to be flat and tested for moisture, and the wear layer, not the core, decides how the surface holds up.

Top to bottom

The five layers of an SPC plank

  1. UV coat

A thin, factory-cured finish. It sets the sheen (matte, satin) and takes everyday scuffs before the wear layer does.

  2. Wear layer

Clear vinyl that protects the print. Its thickness, in mil, is the number that tells you how long the surface will keep looking new. Thicker is tougher, not stronger.

  3. Printed decor film

A photographic print of oak, hickory or stone. Better products add texture that follows the printed grain, so the boards look and feel less flat.

  4. Rigid SPC core

The part that makes SPC "SPC": limestone powder bound with PVC and stabilizers, pressed into a stiff, dense board with the click-lock profile milled into its edges. It has no wood fiber, so water cannot make it swell.

  5. Attached pad

A foam (IXPE) or cork backing bonded at the factory, on products that have one. It softens the step and quiets the floor. Not every SPC has one, so check the spec sheet.

The industry spec for this kind of floor is ASTM F3261, which covers resilient flooring with a rigid polymeric core. When you compare two SPC products, compare them layer by layer: wear layer in mil, core thickness, whether there is a pad and what it is made of, and the click system. Total thickness alone tells you little.

The 3D Lab

Pull a plank apart

Tap a layer to lift it. Drag sideways to turn the plank.

Who SPC is great for, and when to pick something else

A strong fit

Busy, wet, hard-working rooms

  • Kitchens, laundry rooms and bathrooms, where spills and mopping are daily
  • Homes with dogs, cats and kids: a waterproof plank and a dent-resistant core
  • Rentals and flips: one durable product you can repeat unit after unit
  • Whole-house runs on a slab, where one continuous look matters
Think twice

When another floor wins

  • You want the warmth and refinishing life of real wood: look at hardwood
  • The space is outdoors, or an unconditioned room that bakes in summer: check the product's temperature limits first, or choose tile
  • You want the softest, quietest bedroom floor: carpet still wins underfoot
  • The slab is badly out of flat and you will not pay for prep: no click floor will forgive that

The Las Vegas angle

SPC in a desert city, on a concrete slab

Las Vegas floors live a different life: triple-digit summers, big west-facing sliders, slab-on-grade foundations, and HOA rentals that turn over fast. These three guides cover what changes here.

See it, then price it

Photos flatten texture and color. Rigid-core planks are best judged in your hand: tap them, stand on them, and look at the print under daylight. You can see SPC in stock at Vegas Flooring Outlet, the Las Vegas store that publishes this lab.
